Dik Sadhan: Directions in vastu and Geomagnetism

Vastu is not based on geomagnetic influences as is referred by some vastushastris. Geomagnetism is only single participant in complex calculations. The whole theory of Dik nyas is based on earth’s subjective relations with other planets, especially sun and constellations. Earth cannot exert influence on single basis but the influence is based on its relation with sun. That is the very reason why magnetic north should not be used in vastu. The ancient sidhhars were aware of geomagnetic changes as can be observed in ancient observatories in Jaipur. They were aware of these influences so they devised a way which can be universally applied and is non replaceable with changes in time and space. The same is the case with Sidereal vs tropical zodiac. Sidereal zodiac is true zodiac as it is based on positon of sun and earth against fixed stars in solar system. The precise reason is evident because earth alone cannot exercise any influence over humans. While tropical astrology is based on the orientation of the Earth relative to the Sun and planets, sidereal astrology deals with the position of the Earth relative to Sun, planets as well as the stars of the celestial sphere, which is very important.

There are certain questions which will baffle your mind when you enter the field of vastu. Most of the vastu shastris either avoid it or they are simply unaware of these problems. First of all let us understand the concept of directions in vastu.

There are four basic magnetic directions in vastu. I have seen vastushastris using compass for ascertaining directions. This is a wrong and inappropriate method of choosing directions. Magnetic  directions change with time and as such you cannot change the orientation of your dwelling everytime. Orient sages knew about this and they were well aware of compass, but they never used the same for directions. So any vastushastri ,who claims to find out the directions through compass is misleading.

The actual method to find out the directions in vastu is based on dik-sadhan. It is not a tedious method. Dik-sadhan is based on surya-chayya or shadow of sun. But due to “Dakshinayan” and “Uttrayan” or natural positions of Sun in Northern and Southern hemisphere;  “shodhan” is been done according to particular date and place. This correction or “Shodhan” finally gives us proper directions.

From  “Shuddha Prichyya” another correction is been made. This line is called “Isha Prichya” and on the basis of this line; rest of the directions are ascertained.

Please note the  “Shuddha Prichya” is been used for people who require liberation. “Ashrams” and “Mathas” should use Shuddha Prichyya only. Temples require money to run and as such they should use “Isha Prichyya” only.

Second problem is related to orientation of house according to Vastu. Governments do not build colonies or houses according to vastu. It creates problems as buildings lose their life force when they are not aligned to proper fields. A building which is devoid of “Prana” or life force becomes a favourite abode for negative entities. This non-alignment of roads leads to bigger problems.

As roads are not aligned properly houses build alongside the roads or lanes also loose proper orientation. One cannot build a properly oriented house along these roads or lines as the alignment is already distorted.  Even if you know about finding the right direction, there will be no use of such knowledge in these cases.

I have seen people building houses according to directions leaving space after the boundary wall.

This is a very wrong method of orientation. The reasons are amply clear. Energy grids of vastu are based on boundary walls or the main compound wall. It is not based on the actual construction zone. So even if you change the orientation of the constructed zone the actual orientation of the plot remains the same. As such, the problems created by disorientation will also remain the same.

It is necessary that the road alongside the house lays parallel to fields or energy grid.
